Indian Inspiration at New York Fashion Week 2012
It’s impossible for the world to stay indifferent to the amazing beauty of the Indian heritage. So it’s no wonder that some of the top American designers presenting their collections at New York Fashion Week earlier this month were literally inspired by Indian culture.
Designers Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman of Marchesa were obviously inspired by Bollywood, saris and India in general when they created this stunning collection. Spectacular colors, detailed hand embroideries, threadwork and fringe are some of the main elements on the catwalk. The collection mimicked Indian fashion to perfection, from the golden embroideries to the make-up. This is something we’d like to see more on the international runways!
Much more subtle that Marchesa, Vera Wang was inspired by a certain personality in Indian culture: Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Wang’s references were obtained through textures (brocade), colors (gold) and prints, but also via high necklines and general silhouettes. The amazingly beautiful dresses were joined by pants and bermudas, for a more urban look that one would expect.
Of course, Indian born designer Naeem Khan wouldn’t disappoint. He mixed in elegant, Indian inspired gowns in his collection, in beautiful shades of coral, yellow or sea blue. The metallic embroideries couldn’t be absent, and neither could the dark lipstick and crown-like hair adornments. We also loved the minimal design of the sandals, with just a few straps and looking quite comfortable.
